Research:
Sven Leyffer obtained his Ph.D. in 1994 from the University of Dundee, Scotland. After postdoctoral research positions at Dundee, Argonne, and Northwestern University, he joined the Mathematics and Computer Science Division at Argonne in 2002, where he is now a computational mathematician. Sven is a SIAM fellow, a senior fellow of the University of Chicago/Argonne Computation Institute, and an adjunct professor at Northwestern University. He is the current SIAM Vice President for Programs and serves on the editorial board of the SIAM Journal on Optimization, Computational Optimization and Applications, and Computational Management Science; he also is editor-in-chief of Mathematical Methods of Operations Research and the coordinating editor for nonlinear optimization for Mathematical Programming Computation. In 2006, Sven (with two colleagues) received the Lagrange Prize in Continuous Optimization, which is awarded only once every three years. He is interested in the development of reliable methods for solving large-scale nonlinear optimization problems and in the implementation and analysis of filter-type algorithms. He is extending nonlinear optimization methodologies to emerging areas such as mixed-integer nonlinear optimization and optimization problems with complementarity constraints.
