Research:
Since joining Argonne in 2002, I have worked primarily on the Access Grid project, eventually taking over the lead of the project in 2005. The Access Grid is software for internet collaboration: combining audio and video with instant messaging and with data- and application-sharing to create a comfortable environment for remote researchers to work together. In addition, the software is free and open-source, so it can be customized to the needs of individual communities. It is in use for videoconferencing, of course, but also for providing remote access to accelerator experiments, for fusion research, for remote medicine, for collaborative visualization. The openness of the Access Grid allows it to be applied to a wide range of applications.
