Marc Snir appointed director of Mathematics and Computer Science DivisionSeptember 1, 2011
Marc Snir, a prominent professor of computer science at the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign, has been appointed director of Argonne’s Mathematics and Computer Science Division. A distinguished scholar, Marc is a fellow of the American Association for the Advancement of Science, the Association for Computing Machinery, and the Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers. Marc will will continue his appointment as the Michael Faiman and Subura Muroga Professor in UIUC's Department of Computer Science and will also continue to be involved with the Blue Waters project.
Until 2001, Snir was a senior manager at the IBM T.J. Watson Research Center, where he received two Outstanding Innovation Awards for his research on hierarchical memory models and on parallel system architecture and software structure and a Corporate Award for work on scalable parallel communications and software technologies.
At UIUC, Snir chaired the Department of Computer Science from 2001 to 2007, and he has been heavily involved in several recent research initiatives. He was the first director of the Illinois Informatics Institute, co-director of the Intel and Microsoft Universal Parallel Computing Research Center, and co-director of the Illinois‐INRIA Center for Petascale Computing. Snir will continue to serve as co-PI of the petascale Blue Waters system at the National Center for Supercomputing Applications.
