Venkat Vishwanath selected for Strategic Laboratory Leadership ProgramApril 8, 2014
Venkat Vishwanath, an assistant computer scientist in Argonne’s Mathematics and Computer Science Division, has been selected to participate in the 2014 Strategic Laboratory Leadership Program.
Candidates in the program are individuals who show leadership abilities, exceptional work ethic, collaborative thinking skills, rigorous scholarship aptitude, and innovative and creative problem solving capabilities. Sponsored by UChicago Argonne, LLC, the program provides participants the conceptual tools to manage complex projects in a practical, real-world scenario. During several multiday sessions, cross-laboratory teams work on a joint project, and each team presents its findings to culminate the program.
Venkat received his Ph.D. in computer science in 2009 from the University of Illinois at Chicago. After two years as an Argonne Scholar and Director’s Postdoctoral Fellow, he accepted a position in the MCS Division, where his research focuses on analysis and visualization of large-scale data and on system architecture and scalable algorithms for leadership-class computers, including data movement and management, I/O middleware and power consumption. He is PI on the DOE ASCR project ExaHDF5: Advancing HPC I/O to Enable Scientific Discovery; he is also co-Pi on an Argonne LDRD on Characterizing and Transforming Applications and Architecture for Exascale and co-PI on the DOE ASCR project Concerted Flows – Infrastructure for Terabit/s Data Transfer. Moreover, he is a member of CESAR, the SciDAC-3 Center for Exascale Simulation of Advanced Reactors, where he is contributing his expertise in data analytics and visualization.
Venkat’s work in the past year alone has been recognized by three awards: an ACM HPDC 2013 Best Paper Award, an IEEE LDAV 2013 Best Paper Award, and Gordon Bell Finalist, 2013.
