Chiba City Accounts

Requesting an Account

Chiba City is available to MCS staff, MCS collaborators, and computer scientists working on scalability research. All account requests must be approved by the MCS computing allocation committee, and may be discontinued at any point.

In order to request an account on Chiba City, please fill out one of these forms:

When filling out the form, please:

  • Make sure you check the "Chiba" option.
  • Indicate in the "project description" whether or this is a new project or is one that is already using computing cycles in MCS.
  • Give the name and contact information of the program manager who is funding your work.
  • Fill in the paragraphs on the form in the "CCST, SGI, or Linux Cluster" section. Any pointers you have to existing project information on the web will be very helpful.

We'll get back to you within a week concerning your account request. Please note that at the present time, access to Chiba is still quite limited.

Account Duration

Your Chiba account will last for one year. If you wish to extend your access beyond a year, you will need to fill out an account renewal request. (We'll send you mail reminding you of this before the year is over.)

The MCS Computing Policy

Chiba City operates under the MCS Computing Policy. Please follow this policy when using your account.

Fair Usage

Chiba City accounts are expected to abide by Fair Use policy, meaning that you should not use so much of the system that other users complain.

Although we have the ability to do so, we do not currently limit accounts or projects in the amount of CPU time that is available to them. Please do not take more than your fair share of time on the system.

Chiba City is a Development System

Chiba City is an experimental system, primarily devoted to scalable computer science. It is continually under development. This means that various components of the system are frequently running unproven or unstable code. Please be prepared for potential problems.

If you do run into problems, we ask that you report these to hpc-systems@mcs.anl.gov.
