MCS Machines

This information pertains to specific machines or classes of machines with the MCS environment.  MCS uses the hostbase system to document information regarding all division machines.

Specific Machines
Level of Support System has devised the following color system to define what machines are supported to what extent. When you hear Systems say "that's a red machine", this explains what that means. For clarification on which category a specific machine falls into, please email systems@mcs.anl.gov.

Green Machine

We support it; we maintain and manage it. These machines are in the MCS environment with Systems have all responsibility and providing the primary relationship interface. Generally, the machine on your desk is a good example of this class.

Yellow Machine

Someone else manages this machine, but we still have some responsibility for it. These machines could exist in the MCS environment or a local environment, for example DSL or FL machines. Responsibility lies first with local administrators although we will provide support. The relationship between Systems, the machine, and the world is coordinated between the local administrator and Systems. A good example of this type of machine would be Tuva within the DSL.

Red Machine

This machine is totally unsupported. You should contact someone else for any questions regarding it. Systems basically provides a cable and IP address for these machines and then leaves the local administrator on their own. Personal home machines and laptops are good examples of these machines.

(Because we are nice people, Systems will sometimes answer questions regarding these machines and thus provide minimal assistance. However, we do not have the resources to support all these machines. You may speak to systems about getting your machine reclassified as yellow or green if you desire.)
