Denali

SGI Origin 2000

denali.mcs.anl.gov was an SGI Origin 2000 operated by the Mathematics and Computer Science Division of Argonne National Laboratory.

System Retired The systems previously known as denali, yukon, and tundra were retired July 31, 2001 and the data in their respective filesystems were archived to tape. A single processor 02 system with a small amount of attached disk is in place to allow users to retrieve their files from the tape system.
Restoring your files from the ADSM tape system All files in the /sandbox will be deleted nightly. Therefore it is critical to retrieve your files from the tape system and immediately transfer the files to their new computing home. No computation is to be performed on the denali substitute.

Step-By-Step Instructions:

  1. Login into the the temporary system named denali, using your previously assigned username and password combination.
  2. Move to the sandbox directory
    cd /sandbox
  3. Create your a directory with your user name.
    mkdir username
  4. Start up the retrieval program by typing
    /usr/tivoli/tsm/client/ba/bin/dsm
  5. The program starts and displays five options and a utility bar. Using your mouse pointer, select "Restore files and directories to your system".
  6. A window titled "Restore" will pop up. Using your mouse pointer move to the drop down menu labeled "View" in the utility bar. Next select the option "Display active/inactive files"

A message window will appear announcing "Changing criteria will cause the current selections to be lost" This is ok and therefore you may click the "Yes" option.
  7. Now you are prepared to identify your files. Using you mouse pointer click on the "+" symbol in front of "File Level" line. This will expand the options displaying the filesystems available to restore files from.

Now click on the "+" symbol in front of the disks/sghomes0 line. This will expand the filesystem into the home directories.

Next click on the "+" symbol in front of the line containing your home directory. You may need to use the scroll bars present to move down the list of options.

To list the subdirectories in your old home directory again click on the "+" symbol. Repeat until you find the files you are interested in.
  8. Selecting the files or directories to be restored. A square grey box will appear to the far left of the file or directory name. This is the box you will need to click on. When you click on the grep box its color will change and a red check mark should appear. The appearance of the check mark identifies the files which will be restored.
  9. Once you have identified the files to be restored click on the button labeled "Restore". This brings up a new window labeld "Task List" followed by a window labeld "Restore Destination".

This next part is CRITICAL. Click on the option "Following Location". This will open the previously greyed out area. In this area is a box labeled "Select". Click on that button and a new window labeled "Select Destination Directory" will appear. Either use the browser window to highlight and select your directory in the sandbox or use the text boxes to type in your selections.
  10. Everything should be ready to start. To start the restore process now click on the "Restore" button. This action will start the restore. You may note the progress of the restore in the window "Task List"
