"Bioinformatics: Challenges and Opportunities for Smarter Computing"
DATE: January 5, 2007
TIME: 10:30am
SPEAKER: Eric Stahlberg, Ohio Supercomputer Center
LOCATION: Bldg: 221, Conference Room A261, Argonne
HOST: Ray Bair
Description:
Recent years have seen tremendous advances in the expanded use of computing at all levels in the biological sciences in general and bioinformatics in particular. From robotics, to large scale data storage, to a proliferation of new software and services, new technologies are appearing almost daily to address rapidly emerging needs, as researchers across disciplines join forces in their efforts to answer essential questions on how life works. As the stakes for improved understanding and prediction grow on both human and economic scales, the drive for faster answers grows. Five years of collaborative projects involving leading researchers across several key bioinformatics research areas has identified several needs and future challenges that transcend individual research efforts. Successfully addressing these challenges will involve more than just scaling up existing technologies, but will involve creative new approaches in computing to achieve a goal of faster insight at an affordable level. The presentation will cover opportunities and challenges in several areas ranging from the pursuit of new treatments for cancer, to sharing of research information including secure use of personal health information, to understanding the functions of plants increasingly looked to as new sources of energy and as renewable feedstocks for polymers and materials.
