Computation Institute Presentation
"Computer-Aided Diagnosis for Breast Cancer and Other Diseases"

DATE: May 17, 2007
TIME: 12:00pm
SPEAKER: Maryellen L. Giger, University of Chicago
LOCATION: Research Institutes 405, University of Chicago

Description:
The accuracy of a medical imaging examination depends on both the quality of the image acquisition and the quality of the image interpretation. For more than half a century, computer technology greatly improved image acquisition systems, e.g., with the development of various advanced tomographic imaging modalities. Computer technology is also contributing to the quality of the image interpretation process by incorporation of CAD, i.e., computer-aided detection (CADe), computer-aided diagnosis (CADx), and risk assessment. In this presentation, research on various aspects of CAD will be given.

In particular, multi-modality breast CAD for the estimation of the probability of malignancy of suspect lesions and image-based risk assessment for breast cancer will be discussed. Extension to other diseases including assessment of osteoporosis and osteolysis from radiographic texture analysis and aspects related to the interface between the computer output and the user (radiologist) will be discussed. Further discussion will include a commentary on the future, based on lessons have we learned from the past 20 years of CAD research, in order to make quantitative image analyses an accepted and necessary component of all medical imaging examinations.

Also, broadcasted at Argonne: MCS 221, Room A134-Workshop.

Sandwiches will be served at both locations.
