LANS Informal Seminar
"Legal Complexity: Measuring complexity within the Supreme Court precedent network and predicting network growth"

DATE: May 16, 2012
TIME: 3:00 PM - 4:00 PM
SPEAKER: Ryan Whalen, JD and PhD student at Northwestern University
LOCATION: Building 240, 1404-1405, Argonne National Laboratory

Description:
This presentation shares early results from a research program that attempts to quantify legal complexity and explain its variance across time. The talk will focus on formulating legal system measurements that are endogenous to the citation network system and subsequently using those measures to predict precedent citation network growth. Yearly court influence is modeled as a function of system stability, complexity, precedent age, and judicial tenure.
