"Effective Viscosity of Dilute Bacterial Suspensions"
DATE: August 6, 2007
TIME: 3pm
SPEAKER: Brian Haines, Penn State, Department of Mathematics
LOCATION: Building 221, A-261, Argonne
HOST: Dmitry Karpeev
Description:
It has been observed experimentally that the effective viscosity of a bacterial suspension is much lower than the viscosity of the fluid itself. We have modeled dilute bacterial suspensions in order to predict this result theoretically, following the work of Einstein on dilute particle suspensions. We add the effects of self-propulsion and the tendency of bacteria to align with a background flow.
