Mathematics and Computer Science Division Seminar
"Super Multi-View and Multi-Focus 3-Dimensional Displays"

DATE: January 8, 2008
TIME: 10:30 am
SPEAKER: Sung Kyu Kim, Korea Institute of Science and Technology
LOCATION: Building 221, Conference Room A216, Argonne National Laboratory
HOST: Tom Peterka

Description:
The basic principle of 3-dimensional display and 3-dimensional perception will be presented and eyeglasses type stereoscopic 3-dimensional and auto-stereoscopic multi-view 3-dimensional displays will be introduced. The eyeglasses type stereoscopic 3-dimensional display is quite popular because of 3D-movie and the multi-view 3-dimensional display is at market now.

My major researching 3-dimensional display types are Super Multi-View(SMV) and Multi-Focus(MF) 3-dimensional displays. Smooth motion parallax can be given by SMV 3-dimensional display and monocular accommodation can be properly given at various 3-dimenional image depths by MF 3-dimensional display. Therefore I will talk about principles, system architectures, and experimental results of SMV and MF 3-dimensional displays.

Smooth motion parallax and eye fatigueless conditions are important for mass product commercialization of 3-dimensional display. So eye fatigueless condition related to monocular accommodation will be considered.

Bio:
Sung-Kyu Kim received the BS, MS, and PhD degrees from the Quantum Optics Group of Physics, Korea University, in 1989, 1991, and 2000, respectively. Then he spent two years as an invited research scientist at the 3-D TV Group of Telecommunications Advancement Organization in Japan. In 2001 he was appointed senior research scientist at the Korea Institute of Science and Technology. His research interests include optical design of 3-D display systems, super multi-view display, multi-view image processing, digital holography, holographic optical elements, and multi-focus 3D display. He is chair of program committee of 3D display part of IMID and program committee of OSA meeting on 3D display and digital holography.
