Computation Institute Presentation
"Language and Motor Systems of the Human Brain: A Distributed Approach"
DATE: February 8, 2007
TIME: 12:00pm
SPEAKER: Steven Small, Professor, Department of Neurology and Psychology, University of Chicago
LOCATION: Computation Institute, RI 405, U of C
Description:
The brain is a massively distributed computational device that is amazingly fault tolerant. Our Human Neuroscience Laboratory studies language and motor systems in the brain in the normal state and in the face of focal injuries. We are particularly interested in the interface between motor and language processing, and emphasize the role of (overt and covert) motor activity in speech comprehension and in representing semantic knowledge for language comprehension. In this talk, I will briefly overview several recent experiments in this area, emphasizing our data analysis methods that focus not on the activity of individual brain areas but rather on their interactions, which enable distributed neural computations.
