Computation Institute Lunch Presentation-REVISED!
"Computation and Analysis of Multiscale Properties of Biomaterials"
DATE: February 28, 2008
TIME: 12:00 pm
SPEAKER: Dmitry Karpeev, Mathematics and Computer Science Division, Argonne National Laboratory
LOCATION: RI405 at UofC / A134 Bldg. 221 at ANL, U of C and Argonne
Description:
Abstract: I will briefly survey our recent work on self-organization in mixtures of biofilaments interacting via molecular motors as well as the properties of bacterial suspensions. This work uses a range of techniques from the use of stochastic master equation models, to their perturbative analysis and to a new take on the classical homogenization theory of dilute suspensions. We obtain results correctly predicting the formation of bundles in actin networks, interaction of filament bundles, alignment in suspensions of self-propelled bacteria as well as their effective viscosity.
This is joint work with researchers at ANL, UCSD, Northwestern and Penn State, including a number of students.
