LANS Informal Seminar
"Modeling Kinetic Physics of Raman Backscatter in Plasma"

DATE: May 7, 2008
TIME: 3pm
SPEAKER: Ryan Lindberg, APS
LOCATION: Building 221 Conference Room A261, Argonne National Laboratory

Description:
The scattering of laser light by the Raman instability is a basic process in laser-plasma interactions that is of importance to inertial confinement fusion as well as to certain plasma-based laser amplification schemes. Since full simulation of the plasma kinetics in realistic geometries is very computationally expensive, there is significant interest in simplified numerical models. I will discuss one such model, its numerical implementation, and compare its results to more realistic plasma simulation simulations via Vlasov and particle-in-cell codes.
