"Design and Optimization: Modeling, Algorithms, and Solutions"
DATE: June 20, 2008
TIME: 9:30 am
SPEAKER: Sven Leyffer, Computational Matematician
LOCATION: Building 221 Conference Room A216, Argonne National Laboratory
Description:
What have the optimal transition from current CO2 emitting technologies to cleaner technologies, the solution of Sudoku puzzles, and the optimal reloading of nuclear reactors in common? Answer: they can all be modeled as optimization problems. Optimization or design is the art of choosing the best possible actions from among a set of parameters choices that satisfy a set of operational constraints.
We present a brief introduction into modeling and solution techniques for numerical optimization problems. We give a brief introduction to modeling languages, outlining solution methodologies, and review online solution tools. The lecture assumes no background in optimization or scientific computing, but will leave you with a desire to learn more!
