SC08 Birds-of-a-Feather Session
"Petascale Computing Experiences on Blue Gene/P"

DATE: November 19, 2008 to November 19, 2008
TIME: 12:15 - 1:15 p.m.
SPEAKER: Katherine Riley, ALCF Team Lead
LOCATION: Room 17A/17B, Austin Convention Center, Austin, TX

Description:
Also speaking: Kaylan Kumaran, ALCF Manager, Performance Engineering and Data Analytics; Paul Messina, ALCF Director of Science

Intrepid is a 40-rack (163,840 core) Blue Gene/P at Argonne National Laboratory and is the world’s largest open science computer. At this size, computational scientists are facing new challenges with scalability and performance. With well over one hundred applications ported to Blue Gene/P, there have been a lot of lessons learned. Load balancing at this scale, single core performance, memory limitations and parallel scalability are some of the challenges the application groups have faced. Groups are also using Blue Gene/P as the steppingstone to explore new programming models for the next generation of supercomputers. We invite anyone interested in the architecture or those with experiences with the P architecture, to make presentations and to join a discussion on the science, algorithms and performance issues on Blue Gene/P.
