"Tutorial on GridFTP"
DATE: September 15, 2009
TIME: 1:00 PM - 5:00 PM
SPEAKER: John Bresnahan, Mike Link and Raj Kettimuthu, MCS
LOCATION: Building 401, Room A1100, Argonne National Laboratory
Description:
One of the foundational issues in high-performance computing is the ability to move large (multi-gigabyte, and even terabyte) data sets between sites. Simple file transfer mechanisms such as FTP and SCP are not sufficient either from the reliability or the performance perspective. Globus implementation of GridFTP is the most widely used open source production quality data mover available today.
In the first half of this tutorial, the presenters will cover GridFTP server administration. They will walk through the steps required for setting up and configuring GridFTP server on Linux/Unix machines. In the second half, they will explain the steps required for installing the commonly used GridFTP client 'globus-url- copy.' They will demonstrate the use of globus-url-copy and describe a set of best practices for obtaining maximal file transfer performance with GridFTP.
Participants are urged to bring a laptop with access to Linux machines to get hands-on experience.
