"Modeling and Simulation of the Environmental Impact of Aircraft Emissions"

DATE: October 20, 2010
TIME: 10:30 AM - 11:30 AM
SPEAKER: Dr. Roberto Paoli, Research Scientist, CERFACS, Aviation & Environment Team
LOCATION: Building 240 / Conference Room 4301, Argonne National Laboratory
HOST: Ramesh Balakrishnan

Description:
The environmental impact of aviation is a subject of academic research and practical interest that has caught the attention of scientists since the late 90’s because of its implication in atmospheric and climate change. This research encompasses diverse scientific disciplines that are based on different physical models and characteristic temporal and spatial scales. Recent evaluations indicate that links are missing today between these disciplines to evaluate with precision the effects of aircraft emissions on the physical and chemical state of the atmosphere. This talk summarizes the scientific activity carried out by the author in this subject over the last few years. The focus is laid on the modeling and numerical simulation of aircraft emissions, as well as on the methods developed to represent and quantify the atmospheric perturbations at different scales, and to incorporate the effects of such perturbations into global models.
