"Pavan Balaji elected chair of IEEE Technical Committee on Scalable Computing"
Pavan Balaji, an assistant computer scientist in Argonne’s Mathematics and Computer Science Division, has been elected chair for the IEEE Technical Committee on Scalable Computing (TCSC) for 2012-2013. The TCSC addresses theoretical and experimental aspects of designing, developing, and evaluating scalable network computing systems, especially clusters and grids, and their applications.
The TCSC sponsors workshops and conferences on these and related topics, and hosts three annual flagship events: International Conference on Cluster Computing (Cluster), International Supercomputing Conference (SC), and International Symposium on Cluster Computing and the Grid (CCGrid) in addition to co-sponsoring other related events.
In addition to his appointment as an assistant computer scientist at Argonne National Laboratory, Dr. Balaji has a joint appointment as a Research Fellow of the Computation Institute at the University of Chicago, and he is an adjunct associate professor at the Institute of Software of the Chinese Academy of Sciences. His research interests include parallel programming models and middleware for communication and I/O, multicore and accelerator architectures, high-speed interconnects, cloud computing systems, and job scheduling and resource management.
Dr. Balaji has nearly 100 publications in his research areas and has delivered nearly 120 talks and tutorials at various conferences, research institutes, academia, and industry. He has received several awards, including an Outstanding Researcher award at the Ohio State University, the Director's Technical Achievement award at Los Alamos National Laboratory, and several best paper awards. Dr. Balaji has also chaired or edited more than 30 journals, conferences, and workshops.
