"Argonne's Ian Foster to receive HPDC Achievement Award"

Ian Foster, Argonne distinguished fellow and director of the Argonne/University of Chicago Computation Institute, has been named the first recipient of the High-Performance Parallel and Distributed Computing (HPDC) Achievement Award.

The newly established annual award is intended for a person who has made long-lasting, influential contributions to the foundations or practice of high-performance parallel and distributed computing. Examples of such contributions include conceptual advances in the operation of HPDC systems; innovative tools for analyzing HPDC systems; and design, implementation, and deployment of novel HPDC systems or applications.

Foster, widely considered the "father of the grid," has spearheaded research in advance computing technologies. He is particularly interested in high-performance networking to incorporate remote compute and information resources into local computational environments.

Foster will be presented the achievement award on June 22 at the 21st international Association for Computing Machinery symposium on HPDC in Delft, the Netherlands. Preceding the presentation, he will give a talk titled “Reflections on 20 Years of Grid Computing.”

For further information about the Achievement Award, see the HPDC'12 website.
