"Barry Smith to receive Distinguished Performance Award"

Barry Smith, a senior computational mathematician in Argonne’s Mathematics and Computer Science Division, has been named recipient of a 2012 Argonne National Laboratory Distinguished Performance Award, given by the UChicago Argonne, L.L.C., Board of Governors of Argonne National Laboratory.

Distinguished Performance Awards recognize outstanding scientific or technical achievements, or a distinguished record of achievement, of select Argonne employees.

Smith is widely considered the “father” of PETSc, the Portable, Extensible Toolkit for Scientific computation, which is regarded as the gold standard for parallel partial differential equation simulations. Smith is also an outstanding applied mathematician. His breakthrough research extending domain decomposition led to three international awards. Moreover, his most recent work has focused on designing and implementing efficient solvers for cutting-edge simulations on DOE leadership-class computers and other advanced architectures.

Smith will be honored in an awards ceremony and reception on August 16, 2012.
