"Argonne researchers play major role in optimization symposium in Berlin"

Researchers from Argonne’s Mathematics and Computer Science (MCS) Division played a major role in the 2012 International Symposium on Mathematical Programming. The symposium, which takes place every three years on behalf of the Mathematical Optimization Society, is the world congress of mathematical optimization. This year’s symposium held in Berlin, Germany, drew a record-number of over 2,000 international participants, including scientists and industrial users of mathematical optimization.

Ten members of the MCS Division optimization group—Mihai Anitescu, Noam Goldberg, Sven Leyffer, Miles Lubin, Ashutosh Mahajan, Todd Munson, Cosmin Petra, Lei Wang, Stefan Wild, and Victor Zavala—gave invited presentations on the research they are performing at Argonne. Topics ranged from large-scale nonlinear optimization solvers, cover inequalities, and composite matrices, to the design and development of the MINOTAUR software package, to the impact of optimization on electricity markets and the energy power grid.

Additionally, Leyffer was the invited cluster chair for Mixed-Integer Nonlinear Programming and presented the first Tseng Memorial Lecture award; and Wild was the invited cluster chair for Derivative-Free and Simulation-Based Optimization. Altogether, Argonne optimizers chaired a total of nineteen sessions.

Argonne researchers also participated in editorial board sessions shaping editorial policy for three optimization flagship journals: Anitescu and Leyffer for Mathematical Programming A, Munson and Leyffer for Mathematical Methods of Operations Research, and Munson and Wild for Mathematical Programming Computation.
