"Pavan Balaji selected as TEDxMidwest Emerging Leader"

Pavan Balaji, a computer scientist in Argonne’s Mathematics and Computer Science Division, was selected as a TEDxMidwest Emerging Leader.

The TEDxMidwest conference, held in Chicago May 2-4, was designed to encourage the cross-pollination of ideas from science, the arts, technology, business, design, and philanthropy. The event featured 50 world-class speakers and performers and drew an attendance of more than 650 people.

Balaji was one of 25 honorees selected from the areas of social entrepreneurship, civics, non-profits, business, arts, science, and education as an emerging leader. He was the only one from a national laboratory.

Balaji’s research interests span a wide range, from parallel programming models and high-speed networking systems, to modern computer architectures, to runtime systems for communication and input/output. He has almost 100 publications in these areas and has delivered approximately 120 talks and tutorials at various conferences and research institutes. He is a recipient of several awards, including the U.S. Department of Energy Early Career award in 2012 and Crain's Chicago 40 under 40 award in 2013. He serves as the worldwide chairperson for the IEEE Technical Committee on Scalable Computing.
