"Grid Computing: The Term May Fade, But Features Will Live On"
In the future, the "sweet spot" for grid computing technology is expected to be in enterprise utilities. According to Ian Foster, director of the Computation Institute at the Argonne National Laboratory and University of Chicago, "grid computing 'fabrics' are now poised to become the underpinning for next-generation enterprise IT architectures and be used by a much greater part of many organisations."

In Foster's vision, these fabrics combine virtualisation, SOA, commodity hardware and open-source software. | read more>

"Intensive Computation Research Not Just for Exploding Star Simulations Anymore"
Scholars taking an avid interest in computational resources on campus 10 years ago tended to be doing data-intensive simulations of exploding stars at the Center for Astrophysical Thermonuclear Flashes. But the days when their colleagues in the biological sciences, social sciences or the humanities could store and analyze their data on their desktop computers are on the wane. | read more>

"Texas-Sized Supercomputer to Break Computing Power Record"
Rick Stevens quoted in the article on the release of the "Ranger" by Sun Microsystems. "Five to ten years from now, a machine of this scale will be routine in a modest-sized cluster." "In some ways it's like giving us a time machine to look forward five to ten years as to what general purpose machines will look like. The smart developers will take advantage of that (today)." | read more>

"Catlett on Stepping Away From TeraGrid"
In this interview with GRIDtoday, former TeraGrid director Charlie Catlett discusses his time with the influential project, its current state and why now was the ideal time for him to hand over the reigns. Catlett also offers some insight on how he hopes to incorporate his past experiences (with Global Grid Forum, TeraGrid, NCSA, etc.) into his role as CIO of Argonne National Laboratory. | read more>

"Chiseling Away At the Mysteries of Life"
Evolution -- the very word makes some people uneasy. But researchers at Argonne National Laboratory aren't looking for a debate about science versus religion. They're focusing on a much smaller issue: the evolutionary analysis of microorganisms.

The Argonne team of computational biologists -- or bioinformaticists, as they sometimes are called -- have developed a new system, named Chisel, to identify enzyme variations and to gain insight into the adaptation of organisms to particular environments. | read more>
