MCS Open House 1998
|
|
The Mathematics and Computer Science Division will hold an open house
Friday, October 16, to celebrate the expansion of our high-performance computing
facilities.
|
| Highlights |
Showcased at the open house will be Argonne's newly acquired SGI Origin2000 supercomputer and the newly expanded
four-wall CAVE virtual reality environment. The afternoon activities will include informal
presentations and demos illustrating the tremendous potential of these new
high-performance systems. Visitors will see, for example, how Argone researchers are
prototyping new designs and simulating complex scientific phenomena in the CAVE and on its
smaller counterpart, the ImmersaDesk. Visitors will also have an opportunity to talk with
our scientists about their research in such diverse areas as climate modeling, numerical
software, computational chemistry, networking, and collaborative environments. |

| Call
for Models |
We have invited local university students and faculty to submit 3D models
of objects, spaces, or art (not necessarily scientific) for inclusion in the open house.
The models will be viewed by using ManyWorlds, our shared virtual space software.
Rendering will be performed by using our SGI Onyx with Infinite Reality graphics engines.
During the showings, viewers at other sites will be able to share in the experience via
the Internet. When submitting your model, please FAX a copy of the release form. |
