<p>Large‐scale marine sequencing projects promise insights into the catalytic potential of marine genomes or entire communities and have the potential to enhance our ability to monitor, model, and predict changes in the marine ecosystem. The number of base pairs generated in sequence projects is growing with each generation of sequencing platforms. Thus, bioinformatics and computational resources are becoming critical factors in the success of marine genomics projects. However, only a few such resources currently are dedicated to marine genomics. Moreover, there exists a tremendous need for community‐based bioinformatic infrastructures that meet twofold challenges of (1) efficiently processing and managing large amounts sequence data and (2) consistently integrating domain‐specific contextual data to facilitate large‐scale comparative genomic studies.</p>
