"Time integration and solver challenges in tokamak edge plasma simulation"

We present recent experiences integrating PETSc's IMEX time integration and solvers for use in the tokamak edge code BOUT++. We consider challenges and bottlenecks arising in BOUT++ simulation of edge-localized modes and discuss the relative merits of time integration and solver choices from BDF, additive Runge-Kutta, Rosenbrock-W, and extrapolation methods, preconditioning approaches for stiff waves, and solvers for the strongly anisotropic systems arising in tokamak simulation.
