Narrative:

Ian Foster obtained his PhD in computer science at Imperial College, London. He is currently a Computer Scientist in the Mathematics and Computer Science Division at Argonne National University, where he leads a group conducting research into parallel languages, compilers, and algorithms, and developing grand challenge applications in climate modeling and other areas. In 1989, the Strand parallel programming system that he codesigned was awarded the British Computer Society award for technical innovation. He is presently a member of the Technical Steering Committe, Center for Research in Parallel Computation (an NSF Science and Technology Center) and of the Science Team for the CHAMMP climate modeling program, and is Co-PI on a Federal Grand Challenge award in computational chemistry. His research interests are primarily in the areas of algorithms and programming languages for scalable parallel computers; software engineering; and the application of parallel processing to problems in computational science.
