Greetings and Welcome to My Home Page!
I am an applied mathematician interested in
the mathematics of physical systems.
My research focuses on the development of
analytical and numerical methods for
differential equations describing these systems.
The Mathematics and Computer Science Division
(and its predecessor, the Applied Mathematics Division)
of Argonne National Laboratory has been my home base
since 1969.
I have held visiting positions at several universities
in the U.S. and abroad, and have served
the mathematics community twice as Program Director
in the Division of Mathematical Sciences of the
National Science Foundation, 2001-'04 and 2005-'08.
I retired from Argonne in December 2008 but retain
my affiliation with the laboratory as
Senior Mathematician Emeritus.
I continue my research activities in the comfort of
my home in Washington, DC, while enjoying the many
cultural offerings in the nation's capital.
(Did you know that Washington, DC, has no vote
in the United States Congress?
The official reason for this colonial status can be found
in the U.S. Constitution, Article 1, Section 8, Clause 17.
The unofficial slogan of the District of Columbia is
"Taxation without Representation.")
My current academic affiliations are with
Georgetown University in Washington, DC,
where I am Adjunct Professor in the Department
of Mathematics and Statistics, and
the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign,
where I am Adjunct Professor in the School of Music.
My current coordinates are given below.
