Argonne installs teraflop computer system

A teraflop Linux cluster recently installed in the MCS Division will provide high-performance computing for Argonne's entire scientific community. The cluster, named "Jazz," also is expected to open new opportunities for scientific discovery. Part of Argonne's Laboratory Computing Resource Center, Jazz has 350 compute nodes, each with a 2.4 GHz Pentium Xeon; 350 memory nodes, half with 2 GB of RAM and half with 1 GB of RAM; 20 TB of clusterwide disk storage; and a Myrinet 2000 network. The system, which was designed and built by Linux NetworX, was chosen because it is highly reliable and easily reconfigured, two essential features for the heavy production use anticipated throughout the laboratory.

Following initial testing in November and December, the teraflop system is expected to be made available for laboratory use in early January.
