Plans for addressing the needs of multiple platforms

The semantics of the current design presuppose that the target architecture is a collection of Unix machines and that a user has at least shell access to all of the nodes. This is true on the IBM SP-1 and on the Meiko CS-2, as well as on most workstation networks. On other machines it is almost true (Intel Paragon), while on others it is not true (CM-5) but it might be possible to define at least some of these commands so that they make sense anyway. Part of the research involved in this project will be to determine what the appropriate semantics are for these commands on a broader range of architectures.
